KIVA

Aminah from Lebanon

Aminah, a 47-year-old married mother of two, has been working as a tailor for 15 years to support her husband in developing their family’s financial situation. She has succeeded with time to expand her business by improving her productions’ wholesale trade.

Today, Aminah is seeking a loan from Kiva’s field partner Al Majmoua to expand her business even more by opening a retail shop where she can display her production and attract more customers.

Aminah hopes to keep on developing her business in a well-managed way in order to ensure that she can provide her beloved family with the standard of living they both need and deserve.

en op Nongbone Group from Lao People's Democratic  Republic :

Keoxai's village takes water from wells and from the local streams. Some people in the village are able to buy bottled water. The water in this area is dirty and unsuitable for drinking without treatment. The nearby villages also suffer from dirty and unsafe drinking water.

Keoxai is excited that she and her neighbors were able to purchase a water filter. Most families report a threefold reduction in diarrhea after they begin using the filter; this is because the filter removes bacteria and other water borne diseases. The water filter also increases disposable income and available working days due to the decreased cost of purchasing charcoal or foraging for wood and/or purchasing bottled water.

The filter is guaranteed for 2 years, though most find the filter works from 3-5 years.

Agdia Isabel is a middle-aged woman who is married with four grown-up, independent children. She is from one of the villages in Chinandega loacted in the western part of the country. She is known for being an enterprising, hard-working and responsible woman who really wants to get ahead.

Agdia is a microentrepreneur who has a sewing workshop in her home where she designs and makes all kinds of clothing for children, adults, and gentlemen. She also repairs clothes and sells natural products. She has six electric sewing machines and two large tables where she does the cutting.

She comes from a poor family, so she left school after secondary school to help out with the household expenses. She learned this business from a very young age, which is hers now and which has helped her to support her children. She buys her inputs from local stores and markets, and sells her clothing in exchange for cash and sometimes credit, which she collects soon afterwards.

One of her dreams is to have better conditions in her workshop and finish making improvements to her business. The aim of this loan is to invest working capital in buying raw materials such as thread, needles, tape, lace, fabrics in different styles, types and colours, zips, buttons, lining, scissors and other items.

KIVA

Carlos is a young man with great drive and entrepreneruship. Ever since he finished his studies, he was determined to find a business that would generate good income for him and would allow him to be independent. This is how he began one year ago with a business of billiards and games of chance in the municipality of Medellín.

It is quite a popular business in the district, and it has become a meeting point for youth and adults.

With so little time in the market, he already has a certain level of recognition, thanks to his good management.

He is applying for a loan to improve the premises in the area where the billiard tables are located, since he wants to make it much more attractive and comfortable for his customers. In addition, he wants to buy a stock of beverages, liquors, and fried foods to increase his sales.

He offers employment to a cousin and wants to generate other positions.

Kiva lenders! Meet Jackline, who is 34 years of age and hails from the Nyamira area of Kenya, an area that has good weather patterns that favor farming. Jackline is a kind, loving mother of two children and has been farming for the last two years. Due to the good weather patterns that are experienced in Nyamira, Jackline has been able to practice mixed farming--that is, dairy farming and crop farming. Through these ventures Jackline has been able to support her family and always put food on the table. Jackline is very proud of farming and cherishes every moment that she is on her farm.

Although Jackline has been making profits, not everything has been rosy. There are challenges that she is facing on her farm and in her life because of inadequate finances. Jackline is seeking a loan of 50,000 KES to be able to start banana farming. Coming from a region where the cash crop is bananas and everybody grows bananas, Jackline wants to take advantage of the good weather patterns experienced there and the demand for bananas and turn that dream into more cash.

Because of the increasing client base and market, Jackline is sure that she will reap more profits and be able to provide for her family and ensure a secure future for her two adorable kids. More profits will translate to a flourishing business and hence she will be able to increase and start other business ventures through the accumulated profits. Jackline has gone through the repayment schedule and is very comfortable with the payments, and she is sure that through the accumulated profits from selling bananas she will impact the society.

Jackline feels relieved to know that there are people and institutions that support and generate opportunities to progress and for this reason she is very optimistic that the loan will be of much help and she will progress in life.

Only a true hero could recover from a serious fall, and nothing about Señora Claudia's recovery from a serious leg injury that required surgery and left her unable to walk for over a year was easy.

Claudia has a business making mops, dustpans, and brooms, skills that she learned working in a similar business. Claudia's average weekly production is strong, but she faces a serious problem: she brings the products that she's made home, and although it's great to produce a high volume of goods, carrying the weight is terrible for her leg. Claudia is therefore applying for a loan to purchase raw materials that will allow her to increase production further and allow her to hire someone to help her.

Claudia has a simple dream: to keep growing her business slowly, taking short but firm steps towards financial stability.

KIVA

Hallala is a 41-year-old mother of four from southern Israel. She was taken out of school after ninth grade but has always been determined to learn and gain skills. Hallala began taking part in a local women’s forum, and through the forum she learned crochet, sewing and jewelry making. She has worked with KIEDF gaining basic business management skills and developed her microenterprise. Hallala took small loans in the past to open and manage her business, always paying back on time. She now needs to expand further and upgrade some of her materials and equipment.

Hallala needed this loan to purchase a sewing machine, specialized equipment, beads, string, wool and other materials.

Hallala’s husband supports her work and believes she is developing a good business, adding to their family’s income. Hallala wants to continue to strengthen her business and provide for her children.

Leticia, Rafael and Porfirio have lived in the community of “Adolfo Lopez Mateos” in the state of Campeche their whole lives, and have been friends since they were kids. They began harvesting fields when they were very young and this activity has become their main source of income. They all have to face the same problem of not having a constant income, because the money they receive from agriculture depends on the prices of the products at the time.

Given the lack of electricity in their community, they usually purchase lighting sources such as fuel and batteries to feed their light sources, which is not only expensive but also impractical. By purchasing a solar home system, Leticia and her group will have a better quality of life. Also, the solar home system will allow them to improve the family's economic situation by allowing them to perform productive activities once the sun has set

In this Group: María Piedad, María De Lourdes, Gloria Petrona, Elvia Piedad*, María Esperanza, Jessica Natalia, María Yolanda, Luis Alberto
* not pictured

The group Cruzloma consists of seven female members and one male member. They live in a small village in the canton of Paute. It is a very calm and peaceful place with a lot of natural beauty. Its architecture is a mixture of old and modern. The people, including the members of the group, keep to the culture and traditions of their villages and make a living by breeding animals, doing agricultural work, or working in the city of Cuenca.

One of the members of the group is Jessica. She is on her second loan cycle with her friends from borrower group Cruzloma. She likes this type of loan because there is more unity among all the friends in the sector.

Jessica is 29 years old and married. She has two children, who are ten and eight years of age. They are studying at a small school in the area. Her husband works in construction as a bricklayer. They do not have their own house, so they live with her in-laws.

Jessica spends her time looking after her children, but she really likes doing hands-on activities; for this reason she has done courses on how to make knitted bracelets, sweaters, and scarves. She knits every day and sells her finished products to friends and acquaintances. She is going to invest her new loan in purchasing fabric, thread, paint, and skeins of wool.

Her dream is to have her own house.

KIVA

Nearly 3 years ago, Sulman was diagnosed with cancer. During treatment, she discovered her talent for jewelry design at a workshop as she began searching for a way to move forward with her life. Shortly thereafter, people began inquiring about where she got her jewelry--prompting Sulman to make a business out of her unique designs. Today, this creative outlet gives her the motivation needed to remain in good health.

Her home-based business has been in operation for over two years now. She produces necklaces, bracelets, and other customer jewelry pieces for friends, family, and her extended network. She currently purchases materials from Michaels and other such stores and hand crafts particular pieces per order. Her business is currently experiencing significant growth through word of mouth. She has picked up more clientele and recently she has been picking up some larger orders. In order to fill these orders she has requested a loan to invest in the materials needed to fill these orders.

Originally from Costa Rica, she has been living in the United States for over 35 years with her husband. Her future goal is to expand her business internationally.

KIVA

Señora Miriam continues with her business of knitting blouses from yarn. She relates that things went well with the previous loan, since she used it to buy yarn wholesale. She says that it went well. She grew her business and increased her clientele and therefore her income. At this time she is applying for a loan to purchase yarn wholesale to knit blouses and thus continue increasing her working capital. She feels happy and grateful for this new opportunity that is offered to her.

Miriam is 45 years old. She has 2 children. One is a boy who is 8 years old, and the other is a daughter who is 25 years old and no longer dependent on her. Miriam knits shirts by hand out of yarn. Her workshop is in her own house, which is in the Villa Fátima area. This is her first loan cycle in the institution. Miriam is going to use the loan to purchase wholesale yarn for her business. Her reason for requesting this loan is because she has a pressing need for this material, since she has an order for knitted shirts that she has to deliver. Miriam confronts challenges in her business, such as lack of payment from some customers to whom she extends credit. She is going to use the loan to buy more yarn in order to knit more shirts. Her desire for her business is to grow more and help her daughter so that she can also start in this business.
