Felicia is the coordinator of her group Victoria Adelante 2 (Victory Ahead 2). She is a young mother with a child and she lives in a simple structure with her long-term partner. Her dream is to have more children and have a successful family. She enjoys cooking and studying. Felicia is excited to be taking out her second loan with Esperanza. She successfully repaid her first loan that was used to expand her clothing business. She started her business with her own savings and has been running it for almost two years. Felicia plans to use this loan to purchase a variety of sizes and types of clothing for men, women, and children. Felicia joined Esperanza to get capital to improve her business. Her story is representative of her fellow group members and of Esperanza’s Haitian and Dominican clients generally, many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti. Felicia’s group is located in a rural area of San Pedro de Macoris, surrounded by sugar cane fields. This area, like nearly all impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic, suffers from unreliable electricity and running water—none of which is potable.
